Coming off the heels of 2020, we want to be intentional with how we enter 2021 by setting time aside to fast and pray as a collective body. In the chaos and busyness of life, there are countless distractions that divert our attention from Jesus. So, we want to enter this season with deep focus and awareness of God’s presence in our lives as we seek to follow Jesus, become like him, and do what he does. The practice of fasting is simple: we remove something and replace it with practicing God’s presence. And we begin by asking God what he is asking us to remove.

For some it might be tangible things like food, coffee, exercise (if you’re lucky), or entertainment. For others, it may be intangible things like complaining, comparison, time management, or negativity. The object is not what’s important. God is after our heart and when we remove distractions we are able fill that space with his presence. So, with our eyes set on Jesus, we’re excited to see how he invites us to further follow him, become like him, and do what he does as we fast and pray for 21 days, beginning January 3rd, 2021.

Day 15: Return to God

Daily Scripture: Joel 2:12-13
“Even now,” declares the LORD,
“return to me with all your heart,
with fasting and weeping and mourning.”
13 Rend your heart
and not your garments.
Return to the LORD your God,
for he is gracious and compassionate,
slow to anger and abounding in love,
and he relents from sending calamity.”

Daily Prayer: Lord God, each and every time I return to you, you welcome me with open arms. You hold me in your grace and compassion. As I return to you today in prayer and fasting, I open my whole heart to you. In my downfalls and my sins, I ask for your forgiveness and your grace. I praise you and thank you for your never ending and always abounding love. In Jesus name, amen.


Day 16: Being Still

Daily Scripture: Psalm 62:5-6
“Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him. Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.”

Daily Prayer: Lord, I am too busy. At times it is the demands of life, but even when I am free, my mind cannot stop racing. Slowing down to acknowledge your presence can feel like climbing a mountain. Would you remind me of what is waiting for me when I stop. Teach me to be still in your presence, entrusting my fears and anxieties into your loving hands. Amen.


Day 17: Prayer for the Global Community

Daily Prayer: Lord, we long for the day that your kingdom comes in its fullness on earth as it is in heaven. Even now, in the midst of global turmoil, war, violence, suffering, poverty, hunger, we acknowledge that you are King of the entire earth through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and that your Kingdom will come in fullness to make all things new and right. Empower us to live into the reality of your Kingdom come. Equip us to join in your process advancing your Kingdom on the earth. As global citizens, we acknowledge the basic humanity of each person that has been wonderfully made by you. May we pray without ceasing for our fellow humans in nations throughout the world. May your Kingdom, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Amen.


Day 18: Being Light, Doing Good

Daily Scripture: Matthew 5:14-16
“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

Daily Prayer: Lord Jesus, I confess that I often reduce being a light to believing things about you instead of embodying your life-giving presence to the world. As I go through my day, shine your light through me. May acts of goodness towards others help them to see you more clearly. Amen.


Day 19: Find Rest for Your Soul

Daily Scripture: Matthew 11:28-30
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Daily Prayer: Lord Jesus, I am weary. My soul is heavy. Sometimes I feel like I am carrying the weight of the world on my shoulders. I am tired of the relentless cycle of pain in our world that seems to be prevalent from every corner these days. Lord Jesus, I am so weary. May you release me, free me, draw near to me, and replenish my soul with your spirit and your grace. May you remind me that this pain and the darkness is not my burden to carry, but a reminder to return to you, to come to you in my grief and sorrow. And in this returning, may I find rest for my soul. Amen.


Day 20: Not Without Your Presence

Daily Scripture: Exodus 33:14
“The Lord replied, ‘My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.'”

Daily Prayer: Lord God, we are coming to the end of our fast. Like Moses in the desert, I don’t want to move out of this fast without your presence. I don’t want to go back to the way things were. You led me into the fast, now I pray that you would lead me out. Lead me into 2021 centered on your presence. Guide me by your Spirit to embrace the fullness of life that you offer and to embody your presence to the people around me. Amen.

Day 8: Fasting for Humility & Discernment

Daily Scripture: Ezra 8:21-23
“There, I proclaimed a fast, so that we might humble ourselves before our God and ask him for a safe journey for us and our children, with all our possessions. I was ashamed to ask the king for soldiers and horsemen to protect us, from enemies on the road, because we had told the king, The gracious hand of our God is on everyone who looks to him, but his great anger is against all who forsake him.” So we fasted and petitioned our God about this, and he answered our prayer.”

Daily Prayer: Lord, I can see the journey ahead of me, but my vision is often blurry and confused. Like your people traveling home from exile to Israel, I long for your protection as I follow your leading. On my own, I will lose my way for sure. Teach me to trust you, even when I can only see one step ahead on my journey, so that in finding my way forward, I also find my way to you. In Jesus, name, Amen.


Day 9: Remembering Your Value

Daily Scripture: Ephesians 1:18-19
“I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe.”

Daily Prayer: Lord Jesus, as I humble myself and reflect on the ways that you have impacted my life through my fasting, I do not want to forget how much you love me. Would you help me remember that I am your ultimate creation, I am your most valued possession, I am your treasured inheritance, full of hope to change the world? O Lord, enlighten my heart so I can remember the great hope you have in me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.


Day 10: A Prayer to Live for Eternity

“Show me, Lord, my life’s end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting my life is. You have made my days a mere handbreadth; the span of my years is as nothing before you. Everyone is but a breath, even those who seem secure.”

Daily Prayer: Lord remind me to number my days and acknowledge the gift of each moment. Would I live today in the knowledge that I live for eternity and would that knowledge change everything I do. When I think of the fragility of this life and the greatness of eternity for which I long, would my priorities come into alignment and would I live each day for you. With gratitude for today I pray in your Holy name, Amen.


Day 11: An Ebenezer: Remembering His Faithfulness

Daily Scripture: Lamentations 3:21-25
“Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.”

Daily Prayer: Lord, it is so easy to forget. So as I fast, as I deny myself in order to draw close to you, would you remind me of all you have done. I commit to memory all of the ways you have been faithful in my life. You have shown faithfulness to me, my family, our community and our world. Would I use this moment to raise an ebenezer, my stone of help, remembering that you have been faithful up until now, so will you not be faithful until the end? You have always been loving and compassionate and so you will always be. Thank you Lord! Amen


Day 12: Prayer for Our Local Community

Daily Scripture: Jeremiah 29:4-7
“This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says to all those I carried into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: “Build houses and settle down; plant gardens and eat what they produce. Marry and have sons and daughters; find wives for your sons and give your daughters in marriage, so that they too may have sons and daughters. Increase in number there; do not decrease. Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.”

Daily Prayer: Lord, we acknowledge that we are exiles in a strange land. We long for the full realization of your Kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven. The beautiful mystery of your incarnation serves as an example of what it looks like for us to live on life on Earth. May your Holy Spirit empower us to live as you would live if you were in our shoes. May we never cease to pray for the good of our neighborhoods, counties, states, countries, and world; as we know you have placed us in our particular location for a reason. Even as we pray for our cities and local communities, equip us to embody the ways you want to use us as you answer our prayers and advance your Kingdom. Amen.


Day 13: Bear With One Another

Daily Scripture: Ephesians 4:1-3
“As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make ever effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.”

Daily Prayer: Father, I know I need others – to encourage me, to remind me of truth, to validate and love me. But at times, those who I am called to love can bring me the most frustration and pain. Remind me that they are a gift from you, intended to make me more like your son, Jesus. Teach me how to patiently love others well. Forgive my impatience and my lack of compassion. Give me courage and strength to love them like you do. In Jesus’ name, Amen.


Day 1: Letting Go of Control

Daily Scripture: Psalm 102:12
“But you, Lord, sit enthroned forever; your renown endures through all generations.”

Daily Prayer: Father, as I sit in stillness and fast, would you help me set my crosshairs on the truth that cannot be shaken: You are the God of yesterday, today, and tomorrow. I do not know how I may get through tomorrow, but Lord, would you help me cling onto the joy that lies beyond my circumstances that I find in your everlasting sovereignty? Allow me to remember that you sit at the highest seat, and are in control of all that is to come. My life is in good hands. Amen.


Day 2: Fasting in the Secret Place

Daily Scripture: Matthew 6:16-18
“Whenever you fast, do not put on a gloomy face as the hypocrites do, for they neglect their appearance so that they will be noticed by men when they are fasting. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face so that your fasting will not be noticed by men, but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.”

Daily Prayer: Lord, you know the temptations we face to seek approval and acceptance from others, help me to fast in a way that is wholly pleasing to you. Teach me what it looks like to fast with a sincere heart and that I may seek you in the secret place, safe to be honest before you to reveal the places that only you can fill. Amen.


Day 3: Prayer for the Church

Daily Scripture:‭‭ John‬ ‭17:20-23‬
“My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.”

Daily Prayer: Lord, in the midst of these days that I’ve set aside for prayer and fasting, would you give me your heart and eyes for myself, the church and the world around me. Just as Jesus prayed before he was arrested, would your Church be one just as Jesus and the Father are one. In that Holy Mystery and tension of oneness and diversity, would your Church’s oneness be a light for a world that desperately needs it. Day 4: Forgive One Another

Daily Scripture: Colossians 3:13
“Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.”

Daily Prayer: Lord, as I fast today, reveal any resentment, hurt, or grudges I am carrying against others. Remind me of your forgiveness for me, so that I can in turn forgive the people around me. Lord, I receive your forgiveness. May I forgive others as you have forgiven me. Amen.


Day 5: Fasting Against Pride

Daily Scripture: Luke 18:11-14
“…The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people – robbers, evildoers, adulterers – or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’ But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’ I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God.”

Daily Prayer: Lord, I can be a tangled mix of motivations. Even now, in this fast, I’m tempted to consider it credit earned in your eyes. I can be more like this Pharisee than I would like to admit, longing to justify myself in my own eyes to secure my place in your presence and in the presence of others. Show me my pride. Break me of my need for this false-security, and open my heart to receive the outpouring of your relentless grace, so that I can fast with thanksgiving in my heart for your mercy and love. Through Christ our Lord, Amen.


Day 6: Do Not Fear

Daily Scripture: Isaiah 41:10
“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

Daily Prayer: Lord, as you silence storms and calm the seas, may you quiet the fear that lingers in my heart. As a new year begins, and as we navigate the grief that carries over from the last, may your presence strengthen me, hold me, guide me, and carry me forward in hope and expectation for what is to come. Amen.


We believe that children hear from the Lord quite naturally.  They simply do not have many of the roadblocks that we as adults carry with us.  So, the concept of helping our kids to become more sensitive to the Holy Spirit is not as hard as we might make it out to be and we want to equip you to foster this in your homes.

During this time, let’s seek God, let’s pray big prayers, and let’s be expectant for God to speak!

Would you as a family pray about a couple of things with your children?

What is the Holy Spirit leading you to abstain from? For kids, fasting from all food is obviously not encouraged, but kids can fast from certain kinds of food such as ice cream, candy and other favorites.  Other ways for kids to fast can include video games, TV, iPads, etc.

Pray that we would hear from the Lord differently than we ever have before and that the Lord would remove any and all distractions
