Adoption is a procedure & status that weÈre aware yet unaware of its full implications. Aware of its mechanics; unaware of its significance. For the 1st century listener, potentially a slave, prostitute, or otherwise person who could be or could have been adopted, the idea that God chose them in Christ before the foundation of the world based solely on his good pleasure and will would have been life-altering. For us, we need to take hold of the truth that 1) God adopted us knowing that we were blemished and discarded; we also need to own up to this. 2) God had to first give up, exposeÈ, his own son in order to adopt us. It was no simple task.
