Peter called the people of the growing believing community to sacrifice their material wealth and give it over to the stewardship of the church, which desired to care financially for all people in the community. A married couple in the community, Ananias and Sapphira, sold a piece of property to answer the call to sacrifice to the growing church. When it came time to give over the money from the property, they secretly kept a portion for themselves in a spirit of greed and mistrust. When confronted by Peter on the matter, Ananias denied that he had kept money for himself and was struck down dead on the spot. When confronted separately, Sapphira also denied the withholding of the funds and was also struck down dead. Fear gripped the new community as they experienced firsthand the power of the Holy Spirit.
