Stephen understands that the religious leaders of the time are still trying to cling to their notion of righteousness obtained through temple worship and following the law. Oneξwouldξthink that after Jesus’ death and resurrection, the filling of the apostles with the Holy Spirit, the consequent miracles that had been taking place, and the sheer number of people that were becoming followers of the GospelξŠ—–ξthe leaders would beξable to grasp the message.ξButξthey continued to harden their hearts toward the Gospel and decided that Stephen’s actions called for capital punishment.
