The Unlikely Saints

September 27, 2010  —

Paul introduces his letter by thanking the Philippians for the care and concern they showed him by sending him a financial gift during his imprisonment in Rome.

But who is this community? The Philippian church was founded with an unlikely group of peopleŠ—”a prominent business woman, Lydia [Acts 16:14] and a jailer [Acts 16:31].ξξ This is not the typical team of theologians and teachers one would send when planting a church.ξ Yet the Philippians church is by all accounts, one of PaulŠ—Ès favoriteŠ—”he speaks of the affection which he has for them and encourages them to keep moving forward for the sake of the gospel.
